This technology is a composition for the prevention and treatment of fibrosis containing 2,6-dimethoxy-4-phenylphenol (acuparin), a natural active ingredient found in Rosaceae plants, or its salts as an active ingredient. It targets various fibrotic diseases, including pulmonary and renal fibrosis, by inhibiting the activity of histone acetyltransferase.
Fibrosis is a condition where abnormal collagen matrix accumulation following injury or inflammation impairs organ function. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, in particular, has a poor prognosis, with an average survival of only 3 to 5 years after diagnosis. Steroid-based drugs and antioxidants have not shown clear efficacy, and long-term use is associated with systemic side effects and drug resistance, leaving a significant gap in approved therapeutic options.
This technology offers an approach to slowing the progression of fibrosis by using a natural phenyl-based compound to inhibit histone acetyltransferase, which regulates gene transcription. It can be applied to the development of treatments for pulmonary, hepatic, and renal fibrosis, as well as health supplements for fibrosis prevention and cosmetics for improving scleroderma, allowing for a product portfolio spanning pharmaceuticals, food, and cosmetics in a market lacking sufficient treatment options.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT for research on the epigenetic control mechanisms of fibrotic diseases.
