This technology features packaging with an antimicrobial layer made of a polymer composition containing metal peroxides. It is designed to generate hydrogen peroxide through a reaction between the metal peroxides and moisture from the packaged product or internal air. A moisture-permeable protective layer can be applied over the antimicrobial layer.
With the rise of home delivery and meal kits, the need to maintain food freshness for longer periods has increased. However, existing antimicrobial packaging, such as silver nano or zinc oxide coatings, relies on surface contact, limiting its effectiveness in eliminating harmful bacteria. Additionally, these methods fail to remove moisture from food, necessitating separate dehumidification measures.
This technology creates an antimicrobial layer by mixing 0.5 to 10.5 parts by weight of metal peroxides, such as calcium peroxide or magnesium peroxide, with 100 parts by weight of polymer resin, allowing it to absorb moisture while releasing active oxygen. By combining a hydrogen peroxide decomposition catalyst with a protective layer having a moisture permeability of 10–100 g/m2·day, both antimicrobial strength and moisture content can be controlled. It can be applied to fresh produce, meal kits, and food packaging, keeping the interior hygienic for longer without the need for separate desiccants.
