This technology is a pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating acute kidney injury caused by nephrotoxicity, using SHP, a type of orphan nuclear receptor, as an active ingredient. SHP can be provided as the protein itself, the gene encoding it, or in the form of fenofibrate, which increases SHP expression in the body.
Acute kidney injury is common in hospitalized and critically ill patients and carries a very high mortality rate following surgery or trauma. However, existing synthetic treatments are expensive and only alleviate certain symptoms. Concerns regarding side effects from long-term administration have created a need for new therapeutic agents with different mechanisms of action, and the efficacy of SHP in treating kidney disease was previously unknown.
This technology increases SHP expression to inhibit the secretion of inflammatory cytokines that rise during kidney damage, and mitigates pathological changes such as tubular necrosis and tubular dilation, thereby increasing survival rates. The gene can be delivered via an expression vector, and the same active ingredient can be utilized in health food compositions. It can be applied to prevent drug-induced kidney injury from contrast agents or anticancer drugs, as an adjunctive treatment for acute kidney injury in critical care, and in health foods for kidney health, paving the way for repurposing existing hyperlipidemia drugs for kidney protection.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning for the analysis of immune regulation mechanisms by infection signals and the development of fundamental technologies for infection treatment.
