This technology provides a pharmaceutical composition for anti-inflammation and a health functional food composition for improving and preventing inflammation, using a fraction obtained by enzymatically hydrolyzing Kalopanax bark extract (Haedongpi) and fractionating it with ethyl acetate. The fraction may contain components such as caffeic acid, Kalopanax saponins A, I, and B, and liriodendrin.
Kalopanax bark has been used as a traditional medicine for insecticidal, antifungal, and neuralgia-relieving purposes, and the anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects of Kalopanax saponins have been reported. However, it has been difficult to fully elicit these activities using standard extracts alone, and no method existed to develop enhanced Kalopanax raw materials for pharmaceuticals or health functional foods.
This technology involves reflux extraction and concentration of Kalopanax bark, followed by enzymatic hydrolysis with Pectinex and fractionation with ethyl acetate to obtain a fraction with superior antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects compared to non-hydrolyzed extracts. The fraction inhibits nitric oxide production and the release of IL-6 and TNF-α, while scavenging DPPH radicals and superoxide. It can be applied to natural anti-inflammatory drugs for arthritis and rheumatism, health functional foods for inflammation, and processed herbal products using Haedongpi, allowing for the commercialization of high-value ingredients with verified anti-inflammatory efficacy by optimizing the use of saponins through enzymatic treatment.
