This technology is a hybrid backoff method for CSMA/CA in Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN). It identifies the network size (number of nodes), calculates the threshold number of nodes where the performance efficiency of ABEB and Fibonacci backoff procedures intersect, and applies ABEB for smaller networks and Fibonacci backoff for larger ones.
In IEEE 802.15.6-based WBANs, medical sensor nodes measuring heart rate, blood pressure, and blood glucose share a hub, making the performance of backoff algorithms that avoid data collisions critical. However, existing methods using only a single backoff procedure have limitations, such as increased collision rates or decreased channel utilization when the number of nodes changes.
This technology allows the hub to automatically select the optimal procedure by calculating transmission success probability, collision probability, and expected transmission time using parameters derived from normalization equations and network size, then comparing the system throughput of both procedures. As a result, it leverages the benefits of short wait times in small networks and gradual contention window increases in large networks, thereby lowering collision rates and improving channel utilization. It can be applied to wearable sensor networks for remote patient monitoring and wireless medical networks in hospitals, enhancing the reliability of emergency response by reducing the loss and latency of vital sign packets.
