This technology constructs an electromagnetic lens using a single-layer flat dielectric where the permittivity decreases from the center toward both edges in the sequence of 6, 3.5, and 2.2, replacing curved lenses. It is placed at half-wavelength intervals above a patch array antenna. The technology also encompasses antenna devices integrated with metamaterial lenses and electronic devices containing them.
Next-generation mobile communication antennas operating in the tens of GHz range and above face issues where high directivity and linearity cause significant radiation performance distortion depending on the installation environment. When mounted inside electronic devices, gain drops due to interference from surrounding structures, and conventional curved lenses are too bulky for compact devices.
This technology flattens the radiated electric field distribution and increases antenna directivity and gain by gradually lowering the permittivity from the center to the edges. Its thin, 2.2mm flat structure allows for mounting by exposing part of it on the device's ceiling. Applicable to mmWave 5G terminals, WiGig modules, and wireless access equipment, it improves signal quality and reach without increasing lens volume.
