VR Motion Sickness Measurement Device and Method

Listed on

Measurement system for determining VR motion sickness using normalized 2-factor VRSQ scores from 9 items

This technology is a motion sickness measurement device that sends a simplified 9-item Virtual Reality Sickness Questionnaire (VRSQ) to a user terminal and calculates a final evaluation score by aggregating responses into two factors: oculomotor disturbance and disorientation. It then transmits alarm information containing content playback times corresponding to the calculated score to a specific VR simulator.

As the immersive display market grows, immersive VR content has increased, but motion sickness caused by prolonged use or rapid screen transitions has hindered the user experience. In particular, there has been a lack of dedicated metrics and methods to quantitatively measure the severity of motion sickness in VR environments.

This technology provides an intuitive motion sickness index ranging from 0 to 100 by calculating the sum of 4 oculomotor disturbance items divided by 12 and the sum of 5 disorientation items divided by 15, multiplying each by 100, and then averaging the two scores. Applicable to home VR headset content platforms and VR content quality verification services, it allows for the comparison and management of user motion sickness levels using standardized figures based on a brief survey.

Key Features:
  • A survey processing unit that generates and transmits a Virtual Reality Sickness Questionnaire consisting of 9 items: discomfort, fatigue, eye strain, difficulty focusing, headache, fullness of head, blurred vision, and dizziness.
  • A motion sickness measurement unit that calculates a first motion sickness score for oculomotor disturbance and a second motion sickness score for disorientation by summing 4-point scale evaluation scores.
  • A configuration that calculates a final evaluation score by dividing the sum of oculomotor disturbance scores by 12 and the sum of disorientation scores by 15, multiplying by 100, and averaging the two results.
  • A control unit that extracts VR content playback time matched to the final evaluation score, creates alarm information, and transmits it to a specific VR simulator via a communication unit.
