Pharmaceutical composition for treating neuroendocrine tumors by overcoming drug resistance through microRNA combination therapy

This technology is a pharmaceutical composition for the prevention or treatment of neuroendocrine tumors, containing the microRNA miR-16-5p and the somatostatin analog octreotide as active ingredients. It presents a combination strategy where miR-16-5p increases the target receptors for the drug, thereby enhancing the efficacy of existing treatments.

Although octreotide is a primary treatment for neuroendocrine tumors, its efficacy is often limited in patients with low expression of the target somatostatin receptor. Furthermore, long-term administration can lead to reduced drug response and acquired resistance, and there has been little research into methods to restore drug efficacy by increasing receptor expression.

This technology increases the expression of somatostatin receptor 2 using miR-16-5p, thereby enhancing sensitivity to octreotide. This allows for potential anti-tumor effects even in patients who are non-responsive or have developed resistance to existing drugs. It can be applied to the development of combination anti-cancer therapies for neuroendocrine tumors and companion diagnostic services for patient selection based on octreotide responsiveness, enabling a business model that expands the prescription scope and lifespan of already approved treatments.

‍

Key Features:
  • Pharmaceutical composition for the prevention or treatment of neuroendocrine tumors comprising miR-16-5p and octreotide or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as active ingredients
  • Pharmaceutical composition for tumor treatment wherein miR-16-5p is included in a form selected from pri-miRNA, precursor miRNA, plasmid-type miRNA, or mature miRNA
  • Pharmaceutical composition exhibiting anti-tumor activity even in patients with octreotide non-responsiveness, drug resistance, or reduced somatostatin receptor expression
  • Step of evaluating a patient as suitable for administration of the composition if octreotide responsiveness in a patient sample is reduced compared to a normal control group
