This technology is a composition for the prevention and treatment of allergic diseases and atopic dermatitis, featuring suberic acid—a dicarboxylic acid found in plant essential oils such as hollyhock and castor—or its salts as an active ingredient. The target conditions extend beyond dermatitis to include allergic rhinitis, asthma, conjunctivitis, and food or drug allergies.
Steroids, widely used to manage allergy and atopy symptoms, carry risks of systemic side effects such as skin atrophy, HPA axis suppression, and Cushing's syndrome with long-term use. Non-steroidal alternatives like tacrolimus and pimecrolimus also lack sufficient safety profiles, creating an urgent need for safer complementary ingredients.
This technology leverages the efficacy of suberic acid in suppressing allergic inflammation by simultaneously reducing the expression of IL-4, IL-13, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8, as well as histamine secretion. It can be applied to pharmaceuticals and health supplements targeting systemic allergy symptoms like rhinitis and urticaria, as well as topical skin treatments, allowing for a product line that addresses both skin and respiratory allergies.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology for research on the skin anti-aging effects of suberic acid via olfactory receptors.
