This technology utilizes alpha-terpineol, a monoterpene alcohol, as an active ingredient in a composition designed to simultaneously provide skin hydration, wrinkle reduction, and elasticity improvement. It is formulated for use in cosmetics, as well as inner-beauty food products and quasi-drugs.
Skin aging is accelerated by the loss of dermal collagen and an increase in collagen-degrading enzymes due to repeated UV exposure, leading to loss of elasticity and wrinkle formation. Furthermore, since it is difficult for active ingredients in topical cosmetics to reach the dermis, there has been a need to identify ingestible alternatives.
This technology leverages the ability of alpha-terpineol to increase procollagen secretion and collagen biosynthesis while inhibiting MMP-1 gene expression and epidermal thickening. It can be applied to anti-aging cosmetics such as creams, essences, and masks, as well as tablet or capsule-based inner-beauty products, allowing for a unified approach to topical and ingestible skincare.
This invention was developed with support from the Small and Medium Business Administration for the development of functional food ingredients using Smilax glabra extract for weight management and metabolic disease improvement.
