This technology involves a pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating psoriasis, as well as cosmetic or food compositions for improvement, containing a peptide with a specific amino acid sequence derived from the LGI3 protein as an active ingredient. This peptide works by activating Akt to promote the differentiation of keratinocytes.
Psoriasis is an intractable skin disease where keratinocytes repeatedly proliferate without undergoing normal keratinization, leading to the accumulation of silvery-white scales. Because the stratum corneum does not form properly, the skin's protective function is compromised, often leading to infections and complications. Existing treatments, which directly kill hyperproliferating epidermal cells, carry significant burdens of toxicity and side effects.
Instead of killing cells, this technology induces the keratinocytes that make up most of the epidermis to differentiate normally, rebuilding a healthy stratum corneum and restoring the skin's mechanical protective function, thus minimizing the risk of side effects. It can be applied to pharmaceutical products, quasi-drugs, and cosmetics for strengthening the keratin barrier, providing a low-burden option for chronic skin conditions that require long-term management.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Education's research on the skin differentiation and wound healing effects of the novel cytokine LGI3.
