This technology utilizes guaiyl acetate, a sesquiterpene ester fragrance component, or its salts as an active ingredient in a composition for managing atopic dermatitis and specific allergic conditions, including edema, hypersensitivity, rhinitis, asthma, and hives.
Allergic diseases, including atopy, are caused by a complex interplay of factors such as genetics, diet, allergens, and skin barrier dysfunction, making them difficult to manage with single-mechanism drugs. While steroid and immunosuppressant-based treatments are effective for severe symptoms, they carry risks of side effects with repeated use.
Based on the efficacy of guaiyl acetate in reducing inflammatory responses by suppressing the expression of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-4, and IL-13, this technology clearly defines its scope by specifying the target allergic disease groups. As it is a familiar fragrance ingredient, it can be applied to soothing perfumes, body care products, atopy-improving foods, and anti-allergy pharmaceuticals, enabling the development of products that combine fragrance with therapeutic benefits.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology’s research project on identifying olfactory receptors that act as drug targets for anti-obesity phytochemicals.
