This technology provides a pharmaceutical composition for the prevention and treatment of allergic diseases and atopic dermatitis, as well as compositions for improvement in the form of functional foods, cosmetics, and fragrances, using the 17-carbon long-chain alkane heptadecane or its salts as an active ingredient.
Atopic dermatitis symptoms and affected areas change from infancy through adulthood, and its incidence continues to rise, particularly in developed countries. Existing drug therapies often only manage symptoms, leaving a shortage of safe, alternative ingredients suitable for long-term daily use.
Based on the finding that heptadecane inhibits the expression of inflammatory mediators such as Th2-related IL-4, IL-13, and TNF-α, this technology targets a wide range of conditions, including allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, contact dermatitis, and food or drug allergies. It can be applied to pharmaceuticals, health supplements, atopic care cosmetics, and functional fragrances, bridging the gap between treatment and daily management markets with a single ingredient.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology’s research project on identifying olfactory receptors that act as drug targets for anti-obesity phytochemicals.
