This technology features a pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating allergic diseases and atopic dermatitis, as well as compositions for improvement used in food, cosmetics, and fragrances, all containing nonane—a nine-carbon straight-chain alkane—or its salts as an active ingredient.
Atopic dermatitis has traditionally been treated with topical or systemic steroids, immunomodulators, and antihistamines, but these carry significant risks of side effects with long-term use. Furthermore, the condition is difficult to manage fundamentally due to its complex origins, including family history, diet, and skin barrier dysfunction.
This technology leverages the ability of nonane to suppress the expression of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-4, IL-13, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8, thereby calming both allergic reactions and atopic inflammation. It can be applied to a wide range of treatments for rhinitis, asthma, and hives, as well as moisturizing cosmetics for sensitive skin, allowing for simplified formulation design using a single small-molecule ingredient.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology’s research project on identifying olfactory receptors that act as drug targets for anti-obesity phytochemicals.
