This technology is a hand sanitizer composition for HCoV-229E coronavirus and its manufacturing method, which incorporates natural caffeic acid or vanillin as an antiviral agent into hand sanitizers based on alcohol compounds or benzalkonium chloride.
Commercially available hand sanitizers contain high levels of disinfecting ingredients such as ethanol, isopropanol, and benzalkonium chloride, which can cause allergies and skin irritation. Furthermore, most are designed to target bacteria, leaving their inhibitory effects against coronaviruses unproven.
This technology adds caffeic acid or vanillin to existing hand sanitizer formulations to reduce coronavirus titers to the detection limit (0.5 log TCID50/mL) and shorten the time required to achieve this. It enhances disinfecting efficacy without increasing alcohol concentration. Applicable to quasi-drug hand sanitizers and hygiene products for public facilities, it provides a means to rapidly block viral transmission while reducing skin irritation.
This invention was developed with research support from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety regarding the survival characteristics and inactivation of the COVID-19 virus.
