This technology utilizes a butanol fraction derived from the methanol extract of the seaweed Polyopes affinis as an active ingredient to create cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food compositions that inhibit tyrosinase and suppress melanin synthesis.
Existing whitening agents are often synthetic or derived from terrestrial natural sources, raising concerns about side effects such as skin irritation. There has been a lack of safe whitening ingredients that utilize marine resources while demonstrating significant efficacy in inhibiting melanin biosynthesis.
This technology offers the advantage of using a marine-derived natural material, the butanol fraction of Polyopes affinis, which inhibits melanin production by reducing tyrosinase activity with minimal side effects. This material can be applied to functional whitening cosmetics, pharmaceuticals for treating hyperpigmentation such as melasma and freckles, and inner-beauty food products, serving as a differentiated, seaweed-based alternative in a market currently dominated by terrestrial plant-based ingredients.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Education for the development of blue carbon biomass-based source materials and the establishment of a marine resource recycling platform.
