This technology is a pharmaceutical composition for treating hyperlipidemia and a health functional food for improving hyperlipidemia, both containing dihydrogingerone derived from ginger as an active ingredient. Dihydrogingerone is effective in reducing body weight, body fat, total cholesterol, and leptin levels.
Existing obesity and metabolic drugs have faced issues with long-term use due to cardiovascular side effects leading to market withdrawal, or side effects such as steatorrhea, flatulence, and renal impairment. Furthermore, developing leptin-based drugs for obese patients has been difficult due to leptin resistance, and while the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer effects of dihydrogingerone were known, its relationship with lipid metabolism had not been established.
This technology is configured to regulate lipid metabolism and lower blood lipids by increasing the expression or activity of AMPK using dihydrogingerone, and can be utilized in both pharmaceutical and health functional food forms. Based on a ginger component familiar as a spice, it has high consumer acceptance. It can be applied to health functional foods for hyperlipidemia, ginger-based blood lipid management beverages, and dyslipidemia treatment candidates, allowing for the creation of lipid management products that lower both cholesterol and leptin levels using a familiar food-derived ingredient.
This invention was developed with support from the National Research Foundation of Korea for the discovery of AMPK tissue-specific binding proteins and the characterization of their properties as molecular targets for the development of diabetes and anticancer drugs.
