This technology provides a pharmaceutical composition for the prevention and treatment of breast, colorectal, and cervical cancers, as well as a health functional food for prevention and improvement, containing the myokine meteorin-like (METRNL) consisting of the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1 as an active ingredient. This protein inhibits cancer cell proliferation and induces apoptosis.
Surgery and radiation therapy for breast cancer often result in psychological trauma and side effects such as inflammation and lymphedema, while drugs like tamoxifen, aromatase inhibitors, and Herceptin have limited efficacy depending on menopausal status or hormone receptor/HER2 expression. Cytotoxic drugs like doxorubicin are limited by their tendency to damage normal cells and cardiac muscle.
This technology utilizes meteorin-like, a protein secreted by muscles during exercise, to regulate p21 protein activity to block cancer cell proliferation and increase Caspase3 expression to induce apoptosis, all without harming normal cells. It serves as a novel anti-cancer candidate independent of hormone receptor status. It can be applied to targeted protein therapies for breast cancer, adjuvant therapies for colorectal and cervical cancers, and health functional foods that mimic exercise effects, reducing toxicity to normal tissues while expanding the patient population.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning for exploring the potential of newly discovered AMPK activators and binding proteins as factors for controlling blood glucose and cancer cell apoptosis.
