This technology utilizes extracts from the stems, leaves, roots, or the entire Dendropanax morbiferus plant as an active ingredient in pharmaceutical compositions, food products, and anticancer adjuvants to prevent and inhibit nephrotoxicity induced by chemotherapy. It focuses on protecting healthy kidney tissue during treatment with platinum-based anticancer drugs such as cisplatin.
While cisplatin is widely used for ovarian, bladder, and lung cancers, its clinical application is often limited by side effects like nephrotoxicity, caused by reactive oxygen species generation, inhibition of antioxidant enzymes, and glutathione depletion. Although Dendropanax morbiferus, native to the southern coast of Korea and Jeju Island, has shown some anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting effects, its ability to mitigate chemotherapy-induced toxicity was previously unknown.
This technology uses extracts obtained through water or alcohol extraction, or chloroform fractionation, targeting platinum-based drugs such as cisplatin, carboplatin, oxaliplatin, and nedaplatin. The material can be utilized as a pharmaceutical, food product, or anticancer adjuvant. It can be applied to platinum-based chemotherapy adjuncts, kidney-protective health supplements for cancer patients, and specialized functional ingredients, thereby reducing the burden of kidney damage, improving treatment continuity, and increasing the industrial value of this native Korean tree species.
This invention was developed with support from the Small and Medium Business Administration for the development and application of health foods through the verification of regional specialty medicinal herbs with anti-inflammatory activity.
