This technology provides a pharmaceutical composition and functional food for preventing or treating diabetes, diabetic complications, or obesity, containing the peptide hormone apelin-16 as an active ingredient. It is designed to leverage the synergistic effect of apelin-16 in further promoting insulin secretion under high-glucose conditions.
Many diabetic patients fail to reach their target blood glucose levels, and widely used incretin-based therapies are limited by the rapid degradation of GLP-1 and GIP by the DPP-4 enzyme. While DPP-4 inhibitors and GLP-1 analogs address some of these issues, their efficacy in improving blood glucose is limited, and concerns regarding risks of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer have created a need for new therapeutic targets.
This technology utilizes the ability of apelin-16 to promote insulin secretion while lowering total blood cholesterol and triglycerides and inhibiting fat accumulation. Targeted conditions include type 1 and early type 2 diabetes, as well as complications such as diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy, fatty liver, and atherosclerosis. Applicable to peptide-based diabetes drugs, metabolic syndrome supplements, and combination therapies for obese diabetic patients, it offers a treatment option that manages both blood glucose and lipids while reducing the risk of hypoglycemia through glucose-dependent action.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning for exploring the potential of newly discovered AMPK activators and binding proteins as regulators of blood glucose and cancer cell apoptosis.
