This technology is a food product for improving intestinal health or gut microbiota, containing the alpha-glucosidase inhibitor voglibose or its salts as an active ingredient. It is designed to alter gut microbiota composition, improving the ratio of Bacteroidetes to Firmicutes and providing weight loss benefits.
Irritable bowel syndrome and obesity are closely linked to gut microbiome imbalances. However, existing probiotics are typically taken only when symptoms arise, and obesity treatments often face issues with side effects like depression or hypertension, as well as poor long-term efficacy. While alpha-glucosidase inhibitors like voglibose have been used as blood glucose-lowering agents, their mechanisms of action within the gut have not been clearly understood.
This technology leverages the ability of voglibose to regulate the distribution of various gut phyla—such as Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria—and specific strains like Bacteroides and Lactobacillus johnsonii, thereby promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria. The food can be formulated as tablets, capsules, beverages, dairy products, or snacks with added additives or flavorings. It can be applied to health functional foods for gut health, functional beverages for weight management, and dietary products for pre-diabetic consumers, allowing for the development of products that simultaneously target blood glucose management and gut microbiota improvement.
This invention was developed with support from the Rural Development Administration's research on the effects of natural product intake on cardiovascular disease-related gene expression mechanisms in menopausal animal models.
