This technology is a pharmaceutical composition for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) containing oxyresveratrol as an active ingredient. It induces the expression of Claudin-1, a tight junction protein in intestinal epithelial cells, to seal the gaps between cells. This reduces intestinal permeability, preventing gut microbes, toxins, and food allergens from leaking into the body.
When intestinal epithelial tight junctions break down, the gaps between cells widen, increasing intestinal permeability and allowing gut microbes and toxins to leak out, which leads to inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. These conditions are difficult to cure, have unclear causes, and are prone to recurrence. In patients, tight junction proteins such as Claudin-1, Occludin, and ZO-1 are significantly reduced, yet there has been a lack of effective agents to induce the formation of these proteins.
This technology is designed to induce the formation of tight junctions through a multi-faceted approach, as oxyresveratrol upregulates the expression of Claudin-1, as well as Occludin, ZO-1, ERK1/2, p-38, PKC-family signaling genes, and the transcription factor cdx-2. Applicable conditions include Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, intestinal Behçet's disease, intestinal tuberculosis, and enteritis, and it can be formulated with pharmaceutically acceptable carriers. It can be used in IBD treatment adjuncts, health supplements for leaky gut, and intestinal barrier-strengthening products, offering an approach that restores the damaged epithelial barrier rather than merely suppressing inflammation, thereby reducing the risk of recurrence.
