This technology provides a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating hyperlipidemia or dyslipidemia, as well as a health functional food composition for improvement, using an extract from the whole plant of Glehnia littoralis, a medicinal plant native to coastal sandy soil, as an active ingredient. The extract contains chlorogenic acid, rutin, or a mixture thereof.
Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide, and dyslipidemia is a key factor increasing the risk of coronary artery disease, driving demand for pharmaceutical and functional materials that lower blood lipids. However, research on Glehnia littoralis has primarily focused on the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities of its roots, leaving the efficacy of the whole plant for dyslipidemia unexplored and underutilized.
This technology utilizes the whole plant, including leaves, stems, and flowers, extracted with solvents such as lower alcohols, hexane, or ethyl esters, with the butanol fraction of the lower alcohol extract used to concentrate the active ingredients. In high-fat diet animal models, it reduced total cholesterol and triglycerides and demonstrated anticoagulant activity, suggesting potential for improved blood circulation. Applicable as a candidate for hyperlipidemia medication, a health functional food for cholesterol management, and a high-value raw material for coastal medicinal crops, this technology expands the use of Glehnia littoralis from just the roots to the aerial parts for blood lipid management.
