Cyclocurcumin-based antihypertensive agent that inhibits vasoconstriction by blocking L-type calcium channels

This technology features a pharmaceutical composition for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, using a compound of Formula 1 with a specific substituent structure—typically cyclocurcumin—as an active ingredient, which is a derivative of curcumin, the main component of turmeric. It also includes health functional foods for the prevention and improvement of hypertension containing the same compound, as well as methods for preventing and treating hypertension through its administration.

In hypertension treatment, it is crucial to inhibit vasoconstriction by regulating calcium influx in vascular smooth muscle, for which calcium channel blockers like nifedipine and amlodipine have been used. However, as hypertension requires long-term treatment, side effects are common, with approximately 34% of patients reporting adverse reactions. While curcumin has been reported to be beneficial for the cardiovascular system, its effect on vascular tone had not been previously identified.

This technology enables the lowering of blood pressure by having curcumin derivatives regulate calcium concentration in vascular smooth muscle and inhibit L-type voltage-gated calcium channels, thereby suppressing vasoconstriction. Derived from a natural spice component, it can be utilized as both a pharmaceutical and a food ingredient. It can be applied to new oral antihypertensive drugs, health functional foods for blood pressure management, and combination therapies to complement existing calcium channel blockers, offering a natural-derived vascular relaxation alternative for hypertensive patients requiring long-term medication.
