This technology is a pharmaceutical composition that uses linalyl acetate as an active ingredient to prevent and treat gastrointestinal motility disorders caused by olmesartan, such as chronic diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, weight loss, and villous atrophy. It also includes health functional foods containing the same ingredient for prevention and improvement.
While olmesartan is widely used as a first-line antihypertensive due to its excellent blood pressure-lowering effects, reports of olmesartan-associated enteropathy have steadily increased with long-term use. Diarrhea caused by this condition often does not respond to antidiarrheals or antibiotics and only improves upon discontinuation of the drug. If left untreated, it can lead to electrolyte imbalance and renal failure; however, previous research has focused only on histological and serological effects, leaving a gap in solutions addressing intestinal motility.
This technology utilizes the gastrointestinal antispasmodic effect of linalyl acetate to correct hypermotility caused by impaired noradrenergic inhibition of intestinal movement, thereby suppressing diarrhea by reducing increased intestinal motility. As a single ingredient derived from natural sources, it is well-tolerated by patients on long-term medication. It can be applied to the development of gastrointestinal adjuvant therapies for patients taking olmesartan, health functional foods for drug-induced diarrhea, and combination prescriptions with antihypertensives, helping patients manage intestinal side effects without discontinuing their blood pressure medication.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Education for research into the mechanisms of natural products in controlling hypoxic cerebrovascular damage.
