This technology utilizes linalyl acetate—a fragrance component abundant in bergamot, lavender, and clary sage oils—as an active ingredient in a pharmaceutical composition to alleviate, suppress, and prevent the increased heart rate and tachycardia caused by the antihypertensive drug olmesartan. It also includes health functional foods containing the same ingredient for improvement.
While olmesartan is more effective at lowering blood pressure than other angiotensin II receptor blockers, it has been reported to cause tachycardia, an increase in heart rate, in some cases. Tachycardia can lead to discomfort and anxiety due to palpitations, and in severe cases, may even cause hypotension and dizziness. Although there was a need for a natural, plant-based supplement to mitigate these effects, the link between linalyl acetate and the side effects of antihypertensive drugs was previously unknown.
This technology focuses on restoring abnormally high heart rates to normal levels by combining olmesartan with linalyl acetate, which positively influences autonomic nervous system balance. As a single component derived from natural fragrances, it can be developed for both pharmaceutical and food applications. It can be used in adjunctive medications for antihypertensive therapy, health functional foods for hypertensive patients, and aroma-based cardiovascular care products, allowing patients to maintain the blood pressure-lowering benefits of olmesartan while reducing the burden of palpitations and dizziness.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Education for research into the mechanisms of natural products in controlling hypoxic cerebrovascular damage.
