This technology is an antimicrobial composition that inhibits the growth of and kills Staphylococcus using agarooligosaccharides consisting of two or more of agarobiose, agarotetraose, agarohexaose, and agarooctaose, or agarobiose alone. The same components can be utilized in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food products, animal feed, disinfectants, and antimicrobial supplements.
The rapid spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a global issue. In particular, Staphylococcus aureus causes conditions ranging from skin and wound infections to pneumonia, endocarditis, and sepsis, and its ability to form biofilms makes treatment difficult. With the emergence of resistance to beta-lactams and even vancomycin, there is a need for anti-staphylococcal agents that are harmless to humans and can replace existing antibiotics.
This technology uses oligosaccharides obtained by breaking down edible agar as an antimicrobial agent to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Streptococcus pyogenes, targeting the prevention and treatment of staphylococcal infections such as acne, dermatitis, mastitis, and food poisoning. It can be applied to acne and skin-trouble-improving cosmetics, feed additives for preventing livestock mastitis, and natural food preservatives, allowing for the management of Staphylococcus using only seaweed-derived edible ingredients without concerns about antibiotic resistance.
