This technology provides pharmaceutical compositions for the prevention and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, as well as health functional food compositions for prevention and improvement, containing an ethyl acetate fraction of rose flower extract as an active ingredient. The rose flower extraction process utilizes water, C1-C4 alcohols, or a mixed solvent thereof.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a common geriatric condition in men over 60-70, causing urinary dysfunction, lower abdominal tension, and sexual dysfunction by compressing the urethra, which significantly lowers the quality of life in old age. Primary treatments, such as alpha-blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, are associated with side effects like dizziness, lethargy, headaches, decreased libido, and erectile dysfunction, while reports have also suggested that saw palmetto, a leading health supplement, may be ineffective.
This technology utilizes the ability of rose flower fractions to reduce the survival rate of prostate epithelial and stromal cells, while simultaneously inhibiting 5-alpha reductase activity—which is involved in dihydrotestosterone production—and androgen receptor expression in prostate tissue. It also includes fractions further purified via column chromatography. Applicable to prostate health supplements, natural medicine to complement existing BPH drugs, and high-value processing for rose farmers, this provides a scientifically backed natural alternative to saw palmetto with fewer concerns regarding sexual side effects.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT for the development of customized anti-cancer functional materials using edible ornamental plant by-products, as well as the identification of novel biomarkers and verification of dietary prevention protocols.
