This technology involves a pharmaceutical composition for the prevention and treatment of essential hypertension, arrhythmia, and heart failure, as well as a health functional food composition for prevention and improvement, using the rhizome extract of Boesenbergia rotunda, a perennial herb in the ginger family, as an active ingredient. Various flavonoids contained in the extract work together to induce vasorelaxation.
Vascular tone is a key factor in blood pressure regulation, making its reduction a primary approach for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Research has also consistently shown that polyphenol-rich plant-based diets reduce cardiovascular risk. However, although the Boesenbergia rotunda rhizome has been used as a traditional medicinal herb, its vasorelaxant effects were previously unknown, preventing its use as a circulatory health ingredient.
This technology utilizes a simple extraction method using water, lower alcohols, or a mixture thereof, allowing the extract itself to be used as a raw material without the need to isolate individual components. The extract contains a variety of flavonoids, including pinocembrin, cardamonin, and panduratin A. It can be applied to blood pressure management health supplements, circulatory improvement functional teas and beverages, and natural cardiovascular therapeutic ingredients, enabling the commercialization of the synergistic vasorelaxant effects of these complex components using a familiar edible herb extract.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Education's research on the analysis of vascular aging acceleration caused by fine dust and the identification of its mechanisms.
