This technology provides pharmaceutical and health functional food compositions for the prevention and treatment of essential hypertension, arrhythmia, and heart failure, using isolated flavonoid compounds—specifically naringenin 5-methyl ether, pinostrobin chalcone, and panduratin derivatives—from the ginger family herb Boesenbergia rotunda as active ingredients. These compounds function by relaxing blood vessels to reduce vascular tension.
High blood pressure is a primary cause of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, arrhythmia, and heart failure, making the regulation of vascular tension a key therapeutic strategy. While Boesenbergia rotunda is a traditional medicinal herb used in Southeast Asia for coughs, inflammation, and digestive issues, and its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-obesity activities have been reported, its vasorelaxant effects and the specific components responsible had not been identified, preventing its use in cardiovascular applications.
This technology identifies individual flavonoids that exhibit vasorelaxant activity rather than using the whole extract, and includes panduratin A derivatives with hydrogen or methyl substituents within its scope. Because the active ingredients are clearly defined, standardized raw material management and content criteria are easily established. Applicable to pharmaceutical candidates for blood pressure management, circulatory health supplements, and standardized single-ingredient raw materials, this technology enables the development of cardiovascular products that directly reduce vascular tension using naturally derived compounds with specified active ingredients.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Education for research on the analysis and mechanism of vascular aging acceleration caused by fine dust.
