This technology is a pharmaceutical composition for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease, as well as a health functional food composition for prevention and improvement, containing a complex of five ginsenosides—Gypenoside LXXV (G75), Rk2, C-Mx, Protopanaxadiol (PPD), and Rg5—as active ingredients. This complex prevents the death of nerve cells caused by beta-amyloid toxicity.
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive degenerative brain disorder characterized by the sequential damage of the hippocampus, forebrain, and temporal lobe, leading to the loss of 30–40% of neurons. The neurotoxicity of beta-amyloid, the primary component of senile plaques, has been identified as a major cause. While activated microglia release inflammatory cytokines, nitric oxide, and reactive oxygen species that damage nerves, normal microglia play a role in clearing beta-amyloid. Therefore, there has been a need for neuroprotective substances that ensure microglial survival, which have not been sufficiently identified until now.
This technology confirms that each of the five ginsenosides protects microglia from beta-amyloid and shields nerve cells from oxidative stress, with their combined use producing a synergistic effect in neuroprotection. It can be applied to natural drug candidates for patients with mild cognitive impairment or early-stage Alzheimer's, functional red ginseng ingredients for memory improvement, and brain health supplements for the elderly. By combining rare ginseng-derived ginsenosides in an optimal ratio, it achieves higher neuroprotective effects than single components with a lower risk of side effects.
This invention was developed with support from the Ministry of Education's research on the effects of ginseng ginsenosides on microglial cell viability and neuroinflammatory responses.
