This technology is an IoT smart storm drain that divides the interior into a rainwater permeable section and a debris storage section. A primary debris collection mesh, installed at an angle in the permeable section, filters out debris while allowing rainwater to pass through; it then rotates to dump the collected debris into the storage section. A wire is connected to the high end of the mesh, a rotating shaft to the low end, and a winding motor pulls the wire to actuate the mesh.
Conventional storm drains often become clogged with leaves and trash, or are covered with rubber mats to block odors and pests, preventing proper drainage and leading to flooding. Periodic maintenance is essential to prevent this, but current manual inspection methods are limited by labor shortages.
This technology uses a rainwater sensor on the upper body to keep the mesh tilted during rain for optimal drainage. Once the rain stops, a motor controller activates the winding motor to rotate the mesh and dump debris into the storage area. A secondary mesh below the rotating shaft provides additional filtration. Debris level sensors send data to a control server and then to operator devices. A solar panel and secondary battery provide power, while an LED block marks the curb for pedestrians. Ideal for urban roads, flood-prone lowlands, and tree-lined streets, it keeps drains clear automatically, requiring manual collection only when the storage bin is full.
