Building structure equipped with planar bracing

High-rise structure eliminating outrigger floors by connecting core corners and perimeter columns with horizontal planar bracing

This technology is a building structure that connects multi-story polygonal core walls and surrounding polygonal perimeter column structures using bracing members placed horizontally at ceiling levels or between two floors. The bracing members are integrated into the primary frame, ensuring they do not obstruct the usable space between the core and the perimeter columns.

In high-rise buildings and apartments, outriggers have traditionally been used to connect the core to perimeter columns to prevent lateral forces from concentrating solely on the core walls. However, floors containing outrigger walls have different structural requirements, which restricts space utilization and complicates construction. Additionally, this creates the problem of lateral moments concentrating on specific floors where outriggers are located.

This technology utilizes a primary planar bracing system that extends from the corners of the core walls toward the corresponding corners of the perimeter column structure. It can be supplemented with a pair of secondary planar braces parallel to the wall extensions and a tertiary planar brace connecting their ends. It can be installed on all corners of a rectangular core across every floor, alternating floors, or at least half of the floors using bars, beams, or structural steel. Applicable to super-tall mixed-use buildings, office towers, high-rise residential complexes, and steel or reinforced concrete structures in high-wind or seismic zones, it allows all floors to be used for residential or commercial purposes without dedicated outrigger floors, while distributing lateral forces evenly across multiple levels.

Key Features:
  • A core wall having a plurality of floors and formed to have a polygonal horizontal cross-section
  • A perimeter column structure with a polygonal cross-section arranged to surround the core wall, with corners formed at positions corresponding to the core wall corners
  • A bracing member coupled to the primary frame with its longitudinal direction oriented horizontally, installed at the ceiling level of a floor or between two adjacent floors
  • A first planar brace with one end coupled to a core wall corner, extending in a direction between the extensions of the two walls, and the other end coupled to a corner of the perimeter column structure
