This technology is a vertical handover management device that determines whether to initiate a handover based on the data rate required by running applications. It selects the optimal network by evaluating end-to-end latency, jitter, bit error rate, and packet loss rate received from an MIIS server using an optimization algorithm.
Mobile nodes such as smartphones are equipped with multiple heterogeneous network interfaces like Wi-Fi and cellular, but existing methods have failed to adequately reflect the actual requirements of running multimedia applications. This leads to unnecessarily frequent or failed handovers and long delays in selecting a target network.
This technology sets a threshold based on the sum of the minimum required data rates of running applications, adjusts the inspection cycle, and uses the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm to select the network with the minimum fitness function. This reduces target network selection time and ensures handovers occur only at appropriate times. It can be applied to multi-radio access management for smartphones, vehicle communication terminals, and IoT gateways, maintaining seamless mobility during video calls or streaming.
