Prostate cancer inhibitory material using Ishige okamurae extract via MAPK pathway activation

This technology provides a pharmaceutical composition for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, as well as a health functional food for prevention and improvement, containing an extract of the brown alga Ishige okamurae as an active ingredient. The extract induces apoptosis in prostate cancer cells by generating reactive oxygen species and activating the MAPK signaling pathway.

Although prostate cancer is a common cancer in men, the specific effects of seaweed-derived natural products on prostate cancer cells have not been fully elucidated. Consequently, there has been a lack of materials for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer that utilize natural marine sources with low toxicity.

This technology confirms that Ishige okamurae extract, obtained using lower alcohols, induces apoptosis in human prostate cancer cell lines by increasing the phosphorylation of ERK and p38 proteins in a concentration-dependent manner. It can be applied to adjuvant prostate cancer medications and seaweed-based health functional foods, serving as an opportunity to transform domestic coastal marine biological resources into high-value anti-cancer materials.
